FAQ
An Interview with the President, Mike Rosati ,

Q. You have a partner Ray Dyke. What is his background and what can he offer the students?
A. Ray has been in the hockey world for over 30 years. Played pro in Austria until he was involved in a car accident that resulted in a career ending back injury. Until the formation of Canadian Goaltending Academy and our partnership he was President and Co Founder of Saves Goaltending and has travelled and worked extensivley with goaltenders of all ages and caliber from all over the globe. He has an eye for detail and the ability to reach into his bag of tricks to come up with a drill that will fix any problem area. Ray has a knack at finding goaltenders that have been missed or overlooked, develops them, elevates their game and confidence and they have all moved up to higher levels. The list of Goaltenders that he has worked with and their accomplishments are too many to mention. He can be hard but at the same time can make you laugh and want to do more. The teaching knowledge and the experience he brings with him makes him a vital part of the Canadian Goaltending Academy's 1 - 2 punch. He always seems to find a way to motivate not just the students but all of the staff as well. He is well respected in the  hockey industry.

Q. You have an extensive background in Goaltending, With all of your experience in both North America and Europe what do you feel that you can offer your students.

A. I've been a goalie practically my whole life. I started playing goal at the age of 6 and I am fortunate to have experienced the highest levels of hockey on both sides of the Atlantic ocean. The one area I feel that needs the most attention for all goalies is " Game Smarts",being able to read the play, understand the situation and execute the right decision on time. The Mental aspect of the positiion. This is where I feel that my playing experience really comes into play. During my 16 year pro career there weren't too many situations that I didn't experience, both positive and negative. Recognizing & understanding those situations and making the necessary adjustments is part of the never-ending learning curve. That is what I try to pass on to my students. I do not operate a drill factory. I do not teach a technique just because it says so in some hockey manual. I strive to prepare goalies with every tool necessary in realistic game situations to maximize their performance where it counts the most, In the games.

Q.
What would you consider to be your career highlights?

A.
Being drafted by the New York Rangers, signing my first NHL contract.
     Winning 8 Championships in Europe,
Signing with the Washington Capitals (Recording my first NHL win.)
Playing in the Olympic Games in Lillehamer , Nagano

Q. What was it like to win your first NHL Game ?

A.
Winning my first NHL game in Ottawa was incredible! Washington was in the middle of a short losing streak and on this particular night, nothing was going Olaf Kolzig's way. Half way through the 2nd period, Ottawa banked one in off our defenceman's skate to go ahead,  5 - 3 . At that point Ron Wilson decided to put me in. I remember skating past their bench to my net & turning up ice for the face off and my knees were shaking. I don't know if it was the nerves or excitment, but once the puck dropped, I was in a hockey game like so many I had played before and loving it. We came back to tie it up 5-5 after two periods. During the 2nd intermission, while trying to maintain my focus, our goalie coach & personal good friend, Dave Prior, looked at me, smiled and said " It's your game now, don't mess it up". Luckily, I didn't. We scored three more goals in the 3rd period to win 8-5.  I stopped all 13 shots I faced and was penciled in to start the next game against Domenic Hasek and the Buffalo Sabres. Unfortunatley for me, Rick Tabaracci returned from his injury and I was re-assigned to our affiliate in Portland.

Q. Who are some of goalies that you played with?

A. I have played with and met some great goalies over the years. Watching these guys on a daily basis, spending time with them and picking their brain were some of the best lessons I ever learned. My first goalie coach in New York was Ed Giacomin. The goalie's brains I picked that training camp were Bob Froese, John Vanbiesbrouck and Mike Richter. During my time with Washington, Olaf Kolzig and Rick Tabaracci were the other goalies. The great thing about goalie tandems is that you are always in competition with them, but at the same time you're always looking for ways to make each other better goalies. Dave Prior was my goalie coach in Washington, as well as in Junior with the Hamilton Steelhawks. We remain great friends and we are in constant contact sharing ideas and exchanging opinions. In Europe most of my goalie partners were younger, up and coming goalies. One of the most notable was Dimitri Patzold who is now under contract with the San Jose Sharks.

Q. Who are some of goalies that you played against ?

A. This list is incredible. I feel honoured to have had the chance to compete against all of these outstanding netminders. Most of them I played against internationally in either the World Championships, Olympic Games, Spengler Cup or other National Team tournaments, some of them during my time in the N.H.L.
Goalies from Team Canada include Corey Hirsch, Bill Ranford, Stephan Fiset, Sean Burke, Felix Potvin, Roberto Luongo, Marty Turco, Chris Osgood, Martin Brodeur, Curtis Joseph, Ron Tugnutt, Damian Rhodes.
Team U.S.A.: Garth Snow, Mike Dunham, Ty Conklin
Team Czech Republic: Domenic Hasek, Roman Cechmanek, Petr Briza,
Team Finland: Jarro Mylls, Jussi Markannen, Ari Sulander
Team Sweden: Stefan Liv, Tommy Salo, Tommy Soderstrom
Team Germany: Olaf Kolzig, Klaus Merk, Joseph Heiss, Robert Muller
Team Switzerland: Reto Pavoni, David Aebischer
Team France: Cristobal Huet
Team Latvia: Arturs Irbe

Q.Who are some of the players or teams you played against.?

A. NHL Teams were Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, Philadelphia Flyers, Buffalo Sabres and NY Islanders. International Teams in the World Championships and the Olympic Games were Canada, Russia, Sweden, USA, Czech Rep., Finland, Switzerland,Norway ...
Once again this list is amazing and most of these players were my opponents in international competition. Some of these players were unknown to the N.H.L. at the time while others were still playing in the N.H.L. . Jarri Kurri, Pavel Bure, Sergei Fedorov, Igor Larionov, Eric Lindros, Vincent Lecavalier, Ryan Smith, Chris Drury, Marco Streit, Jochen Hecht, Marco Sturm, Rob Blake, Paul Kariya, the Sedin twins, Ken Linesman, Mark Napier, Reed Larsson, Daniel Alfreddson, Mats Sundin, Peter Lee, Thomas Steen, Nicklas Lidstrom, Robert Lang, Jaromir Jagr, Brendan Shanahan, Shayne Corson, Joe Sakic, Shane Doan, the list goes on. Playing against the world's best players brings you to a whole new level. A level you never knew existed, but one that you strived to maintain.

Q.
Why did you retired at the age of 37 from professional hockey,?

A. I retired at the age of 37 quite honestly because the time was right. I always said that I would rather walk away from playing on my terms, than to be kicked out of the game. I feel extremely fortunate to have had the career that I had and I strongly believe that in life there are signs all around us, recognizing them is what helps us to make the really hard decisions.  As a player I played the game with passion, giving my heart and soul to every team I ever played for. Walking away from the game was the hardest thing I ever had  to do as a player but in doing so I accepted a position as goalie coach in Mannheim where I worked closely with Cristobal Huet. It was here that I developed a whole new passion, a passion for coaching, a passion for teaching, a passion for giving something back to the game that had given so much to me. I bring that same passion with me every day. It's what drove me to be the best player that I could have been, it's what drives me to be the best coach that I can be.

Q. Your Training Centre uses Synthetic Ice , What do you feel are the benefits of training on this surface?

A. Until my retirement from professional hockey in Europe I had heard about it but never seen it or trained on it. My first time was when I met Ray and he did some work with me on it. To my surprise it was amazing. It felt like ice, you could do anything on it. The only difference that I found was it was a little more resistant in glide, which for training is great. There is no better way to gain Balance, Body Control, and Foot Speed than Resistance Training. The surface also has a tremendous benefit for younger goalies in that you cannot cheat on it. You have to skate and move with bent knees. Thats Stance! Thats a key part of this position. The surface will force you work harder but you will reap the benefits. Make sure to watch the video on the site and see for yourself how good and controled you can move.
